SOE works to advance Operations Engineering for the benefit of everyone through education, training, study and research. SOE also establishes and maintains standards of competence and conduct for those engaged in Operations Engineering professionally, with an emphasis on enhancing public safety. Through its Professional Sectors of IRTE, IPlantE and BES, SOE directly influences the road transport, plant and engineer surveying sectors, developing best practice and improving compliance across the board.
For LEV specialists – the SOE has a sub-branch – the Institute of Plant Engineers (IPlantE).
Members can join as Associates of SOE/IPlantE on-line – Join SOE
Other grades available are Member and Fellow.
Through the SOE members can be put forward to the Engineering Council for the awards of Eng Tech, IEng and CEng appropriate to their qualifications and expertise/experience.

BOHS is one of the biggest occupational hygiene societies in Europe, and the only professional society representing qualified occupational hygienists in the UK. The Society as a whole offers membership to anyone with an interest in a healthy work environment. If you’re not yet a member why not consider joining? Check out the benefits and join online via the Membership section.
The Faculty of Occupational Hygiene within BOHS develops and maintains the professional standards of occupational hygienists, and membership of the BOHS Faculty is restricted to professionally qualified hygienists. The Faculty is also the only UK examining board for professional, postgraduate qualifications in occupational hygiene. The Education section is full of information about routes into occupational hygiene, or if you want specific details about qualifications, go straight to theExaminations section.
P601/P602 LEV qualifications flyers
The most recent Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) guidance from the HSE, HSG258, refers to both of our LEV qualifications – ‘P601 Initial Appraisal and Thorough Examination and Testing of Local Exhaust Systems’ and ‘P602 Basic Design Principles of Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems’.
P601 is useful for any technician who actually tests ventilation systems within industry and in public sector buildings, and P602 is about basic design, and is therefore relevant for company engineers and managers who design their own systems. The syllabus for each course can be downloaded here:
P601 LEV Examination & Testing
P602 LEV Basic Design
Gaining proficiency Certificates – P601, P602 etc leads to the possibility of gaining further recognition within BOHS via the “Specialist” routes within the Faculty. This leaflet outlines the route-map towards gaining, in the first instance the award of “Certificate of Operational Competence (Control)” Specialist Routes to Progress in the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene
ILEVE has been established to promote air quality in the workplace and to reduce ill health and death due to airborne contamination and hazardous substances in the working environment.
The Institute exists to recognise competence in the practical application of local exhaust ventilation and to raise awareness of the importance of good air quality and ventilation in workplaces. ILEVE is supported by the Health and Safety Executive.
The Mission is to provide safely controlled working environments, free from harmful airborne contaminants by:
- Providing its members and the public with first class information
- Providing a career path for Engineers in Local Exhaust Ventilation to full professional Registration.
- Maintaining and Enhancing professional excellence throughout by developing and accrediting courses of study
